If you’re a Salsa addicted like me, when you travel for pleasure or work you wanna check the local Salsa scene and have a taste of the best clubs and parties around :)

So many people are asking:
Where to dance Salsa in Amsterdam?
How is the Salsa scene in Holland?
What styles are more danced?

Well, let’s answer one by one.

First of all, I should say that I’m from Milano, Italy, and there the Salsa scene is HUGE… so I was spoiled in a way, but also feed up by the attitude of the dancers there.

Well, after almost 4 years of living and dancing here in Holland I can say that Salsa scene is small but very active! :)
It’s possible to dance in Amsterdam almost everyday – seriously from Wednesday to Sunday.

For the Salsa tourist coming to Amsterdam is disappoiting to notice that there are not many Salsa Club.
This is because the Salsa scene in Holland is mainly made by parties and school socials that are not very easy to find for the tourists… unless you read this post indeed ;)


About styles, here everything is danced: on1, on2 (that is growing), cuban, chacha, bachata, merengue (as it’s very popular in the ex colonies like Antilles), and even Zouk!
Below some tips about the best clubs and parties to check out.


Clubs

There’s only one Salsa club that I recommend to visit in the city:
Cantinero – Taberna salon de baile – in Marie Heinekenplein.
This is THE place that you don’t wanna miss to see how the local scene is.
If you’re accustomed to big “Salsodromo” like Tropicana (Milano), well you’ll think “is that all??” but don’t understimate this bar/restaurant.
Cantinero is small, rustic, cheap, but still the place where you have a great welcoming warm feeling with the wood decorations and soft lights, together with a crowd that is, well, 100% Amsterdam style with latinos, africanos, Dutch and everything in between :)

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Cantinero is now CLOSED (since end of Feb 2010). This was a terrible news for all the Salseros in Amsterdam… but life goes on and we have new places now that are taking over:

Chicano’s Restaurant (Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 105) is according to many the Cantinero replacement.

Good atmosphere and parties organized every week from Thursday till Sunday by Extremos Salsa school.


There are other misleading places in town with attractive names, like La Rumba, El Punto Latino, Brazil Bar… well let me tell you: if you like latin clubs with people looking around and no much dancing then go there.
If you’re looking for Salsa places when you can dance and get to know people, then go somewhere else :)

Anyway, we’re talking about dancing here so let’s continue with the options.

Badcuyp – this is the cuban club in town – really difficult to find NY or LA dancers there :)
The best night is on Wednesday, and good thing is that is close to Cantinero if the night is not going as you expected.


Parties

This is actually a too complex and too long list, so I recommend you to check this great agenda at http://www.salsa.nl/Agenda/home.html for a full list.


I just put down a list of the parties I recommend absolutely to go:
- Copa Cabana (every other Friday): it’s out of the center and you’ll probably need a taxi, but crowd is good and goes on till 3am. Also, you can see there people dancing ZOUK, a dance that is popular in few other places outside Holland but still interesting to see.
- SalsaLounge (last Sunday of the month): once more popular, now still attracts many mixed people because has a latin-house room and a Salsa room. It’s good fun and the location (Hotel Arena) is just great to see, even if the floor is unfortunately far to be good.


Recently Amsterdam has lost some of the Salsa action in favor of other cities that now have great parties… the top for me is Utrecht (40Km away from Amsterdam, 30m by train).
If you really want to have a great Salsa night don’t miss these parties:
- Salsa Casa Loca (last Saturday of the month): I always have a blast there, absolutely the best location/dancers/music!
- Winkel Van Sinkel (1st & 3rd Sunday of the month): Very good location and floor, sometime the level of dancers is not very high but I would check it out! Watch out that close at midnight… so be there Dutch time (=early)

I know that is difficult to find updated list of clubs/parties… I remember once in Copenhagen ending up in adresses of clubs that have been closed years ago and was really annoying.

So, feel free to contact me if you’re coming to Amsterdam and will be nice to go out dancing in the right places! ;)

Sono appena tornato da Bornemouth, sede dell’UK Salsa Congress dove sono stato lo scorso week-end.

A parte un problema col volo Thomsonfly (ritardo di 6 ore e mezza!!!) per cui abbiamo dovuto prendere ‘al volo’ un altro aereo, tutto il resto e’ andato alla perfezione.

Belli i workshop, il mio preferito e’ stato quello dei ‘Los Hermanos’ di Torino.

Tanti gli show, con gli SwingGuys che hanno riscosso tantissimo successo per la SALSA-cabaret molto divertente da vedere ma anche molto tecnica.

Un SALSA Congress e’ un’esperienza da non perdere: non si va solo per imparare qualche figura nuova, e’ una full-immersion totale!

Io e Moranni siamo partiti venerdi’ pomeriggio in moto (son quasi 500Km di autostrada) per raggiungere Amburgo per l’ora di cena, e poi buttarci con gli altri nel party serale.

Sabato abbiamo preso il pass giornaliero e abbiamo seguito le lezioni di Pedro Gomez , Jazzy, Alex Da Silva, Al Espinoza, Luis Vasquez.
Personalmente mi son piaciuti molto i workshop di Gomez e Luis Vasquez, oltre a belle figure sanno come vanno spiegate!

A fine giornata siamo stati tutti insieme ad un ristorante italiano li’ vicino, gestito da una vera famiglia siciliana con tanto di limoncello offerto a fine cena e mamma in cucina (!) e poi ci siamo ributtati nel party fino a tardi.

Domenica, ormai cotti, abbiamo fatto un giro in citta’ prima di ripartire in moto per rientrare ad A’dam… in realta’ abbiamo preso il battello panoramico ma mi sono addormentato subito.

Lo scorso week-end la scuola Extremos ha organizzato una 2-giorni di workshop e party con teacher internazionali.

I workshop sono stati eccezionali, a parte quelli di NY style sul 2 che e’ estremamente complicato. :-)

I migliori sono stati Adrian y Anita (Spain) e Fadi, che hanno spiegato sequenze molto interessanti!
C’erano presenti anche i Serial Dancers da Bari, di cui fa parte Tony Lara che pare sia famoso per aver inventato la ‘bachata italiana’ anche se e’ mezzo spagnolo e mezzo inglese.

Ho seguito pure un workshop di REGGETON :-D

Al dire il vero il club Paradiso e’ molto famoso qui, anche perche’ e’ all’interno di una chiesa :-)

Boys and girlsE’ stato bello entrare nell’ingresso degli artisti, cambiarsi nei camerini, insomma ci siamo sentiti un po’ star anche se poi quando aAbbiamo ballato tra di noi era molto presto e non c’era quasi nessuno nel locale.

Piu’ tardi si e’ riempito di gente molto strana, e anche gli spettacoli erano sulla stessa linea finche’ a mezzanotte siamo andati a ballare SALSA da un’altra parte :-D

Sabato sveglia e corsetta salutare, alle 2 lo Show Team training fino alle 4.

Benelux Salsa CongressA seguire, partenza con alcuni del gruppo verso Brussels, per il party del Benelux Salsa Congress!!

In macchina per piu’ di 2 ore con loro ho preso una decisione: imparero’ il Dutch.

La location del Salsa Congress era un palazzo storico con un salone di inizio 900 con lampadari paura e quadri alle pareti, davvero un bel posto, dove si sono esibiti personaggi tosti. Li’ ho capito che la gente vuol vedere 2 cose: la dama che fa la spaccata, e l’uomo che fa fare 10 giri alla dama.

Mi aspettavo piu’ gente cmq, anche se ci siamo divertiti lo stesso e, incredibile, abbiamo trovato altra gente da Amsterdam che conoscevamo.

Rientro alle 6 di mattina (dopo ancora piu’ di 2 ore in macchina in cui mi sono ulteriormente convinto che devo imparare il Dutch).

Sveglia alle 12 e partenza per Zoetermeer (70km da A’dam) dove c’era David Paris from NYC a tenere dei workshop.

Sto tizio e’ basso e tarchiato, sui 120kg mentre la ballerina e’ alta 1 metro e ne pesera’ 40.

Fanno SALSA acrobatica, come nella foto a fianco e pure peggio… e’ piu’ una forma di ginnastica che SALSA, per questo non e’ che mi ha esaltato il suo show.

Pero’ e’ un grande istruttore, davvero molto chiaro e semplice da seguire!

Abbiamo seguito 3 corsi:

- SALSA turn pattern
- DIPS (quelli che una volta si chiamavano casche’)
- SALSA ACROBATICA (roba base ma spettacolare)

I primi 2 sono riutilizzabili, il terzo e’ pura fantascienza, con la tipa che ti scivola in mezzo alle gambe e si sdraia per terra, poi la tiri su’ di potenza e ti salta sulla schiena… :-) beh cmq e’ divertente.

La sera c’era un party ed e’ stato bello, anche una bella occasione di conoscerci meglio tra noi dello Show Team.

Si tratta del piu’ grande festival di musica caraibica d’Europa (cosi’ dicono).

Io, Colombo e Paul abbiamo noleggiato una Renault Modus e ci siamo andati, partenza da Amsterdam.


Abbiamo passato gran parte del tempo nel “Palacio de la SALSA” dove si e’ ballato dalle 7 alle 5 di mattina :-)

La festa e’ andata particolarmente bene al Colombo.

Per prima cosa si e’ messo a ballare con una tipa molto in gamba, io mi metto a filmarli e lei mentre balla con lui spara una spaccata da paura che e’ gia’ leggenda (ho il filmato assoluto!).

Poi mentre camminiamo una tipa gli prende la mano e si mettono a ballare insieme, etc. etc. finche’ non li vediamo qualche ora dopo abbracciati a ballare il merengue (!!!) con un grande sorriso stampato sulla faccia del Colombo hahahahah

E Paul? ha passato gran parte del tempo a carognare, ma che risate che ci siamo fatti a spiare Colombo! HAHAHA
Ah, e c’era anche il concerto de “La 33″ che sono troppo spettacolari…
